Judith Scott

Judith Scott is American artist, born with Down Syndrome who has created over 200 cocoon-like sculptures. Scott would wrap yarn, fabric, and other colourful fibres around the found objects like broomsticks and shopping carts, often engulfing these items so thoroughly that they would become unrecognizable.

What I really like about her work is that her works resonate uncannily with a range of material cultural practices that involve intentional accretion for the purpose of healing. Moreover, I believe her work is an abstract reflection of her life, the colourful, idyllic childhood, the loneliness and isolation of institutional care are all presented though the layers. It also seems, as she covers each object with new meanings by layering, possibly attaching an idea to an object that existed at one meaning, however, after she reimagines it with the layers and layers of medium, it starts to gain a new meaning. What I find particularly influential about her work is that she reflected herself in her artworks and what I find the most challenging about design and textiles is that it sometimes may be hard to make the work about yourself or how you really want to express yourself, due to business and customer needs, however, I believe her influence could be taken further by exploring the myself through my work. Moreover, I could also try this idea of layering on the body, also using different objects to develop design ideas.
